Outlook introduction and trick: Making quick notes

Many friends are using Outlook Express (OE) as their favorite email clients. It comes with Windows and we need not pay for it. And OE also provides nearly all functions we needed.

Of course there is must be some people using Outlook, like me. Outlook is not free, it is a component of Microsoft Office suite. Then what is the different between Outlook and OE? Is OE the express and free version of Outlook. Is Outlook more suitable for me?

First, I think for a pure email client software, OE is somewhat better than Outlook. But sometimes what we need is not only this, but a full integration of Personal Information Manager (PIM). For this, I think Outlook is the best choice.

By Outlook, we can manage all resources like contacts, todos, calendar, notes, etc. All of these focus in contacts. By viewing one contact’s “action”, we can find any thing related with him (her), like meetings, emails, and so on.

OK, here’s a trick of Outlook. Many people say Outlook is a big one and slow to start. We often need to make a quick note of something and are not patient enough to wait for outlook to load. I alwalys start a notepad to write and then save it. Of cource it is so inconvenient until I find this.

For example you install Office in “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office”, then you need to create a shortcut of “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\OUTLOOK.EXE” /c ipm.stickynote”. By clicking this shortcut, you can quickly create a note without to start Outlook fully. The note will be automatic saved when you close the small window.

PS: if your Office version is not 2003, maybe you should change the directory in the shortcut. The switch “/c ipm.stickynote” is the key of this trick.
